Samsung is trying their hand at more than just a few new innovations for mobile devices these days, from their recent Galaxy Round smartphone that has all but made a huge splash in the mobile market, to their giant 105 inch Curved TV which Samsung showed off at CES this past week. That wasn’t the only thing they showcased though. Remember the patent that they filed for regarding tech surrounding a tablet with a foldable display? Well it turns out Samsung showcased that at CES as well, in case you missed it. This new type of foldable display tech is making some great progress, and Samsung plans to use this type of display on a potential future project, in hopes to release a foldable tablet down the road.
You might already know that the Flexible tech used in Samsungs Galaxy Round and their curved TV displays is different from the Foldable Tech they’re currently working on, but it’s worth mentioning for those who didn’t. As for the Foldable Tech that Samsung showed off, according to gforgames, the display tech was only shown off to a handful of VIPs that were at a special event. The event was held at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas, where CES happens every year. The event was unfortunately not open to the public, but since the display was ready to be shown off in person even at a closed event, means that we might start to see some demos open to the public in the near future.
The Foldable panel was reportedly measured at a size of 5.68 inches, and will join the various other AMOLED displays that Samsung uses in their products. Although this will be an AMOLED display, it will be slightly different from the other types of AMOLEDS were used to. It’s made of up some different materials, like a thin film polymide substrate material that allows the display to fold up like a piece of paper. Samsung was able to make this foldable display sensitive to touch, which is attributed to their capability to apply a touch screen panel (TSP) using what’s called single layer metal mesh technology. All this technology from Samsung is fairly new and obviously still in early development, but it’s nice to know that Samsung is getting somewhere with it.
